Document Summary

Pathogen detected, now innate immune mediators that get rid of microbial infection employed. Secreted mediators of innate system (killing and protective mechanisms) Inflammation regarded as 5 cardinals of symptoms: heat, redness, swelling, pain, loss of function (if enough) Cytokines and chemokines (key mediators of inflammation: cytokines are a category of signaling molecules that act like hormones and neurotransmitters, are used extensively in cellular communication. Cytokines generally enhance ability of cells to get rid of invading pathogen. Examples are il-8 (cxcl8), mcp1 (monocyte chemotactic peptide 1): both are a diverse collection of soluble proteins and peptides that modulate behavior of cells at extremely small concentrations and can change behavior of tissue very quickly. They can act both locally and systemically, and have many biological activities and pleiotropic effects (cause different behaviours). Stuff leaks out of blood vessel, leading to edema and swelling as serum factors enter site.
