Document Summary

Lecture 4: cellular and humoral mediators of defense. Inflammation is triggered by cytokines and chemokines during an immune response. Cytokines soluble proteins; acts as communicator between leukocytes. Chemokines part of cytokines; attract other cells to the site (direct leukocyte migration) Epithelial cells activated upon contact with microorganism. Pathogen with pamp damages epithelium to break through epithelial barrier. Prrs are triggered, nfkb, inflammasome are activated cytokines and chemokines are activated that call in cellular reinforcements inflammation. Cytokines and chemokines bring in effector cells . Cellular re-enforcements must escape from blood vessels. Cells that make up blood vessels (endothelial cells) underlying the epithelium are impermeable to cells in the blood stream and plasma. Endothelial cells become leaky, start to swell, and flow of serum proteins out. Wbc (leukocytes) brought to site of infection. **note leukocytes of the innate system; leukocytes of the adaptive system called lymphocytes (t and b cells) Cytokine activated endothelial cells express adhesion molecules.
