Innate immunity never changes (ie. never gets better) when the same pathogen comes back; in contrast, the adaptive immunity can get better. The microbes that colonize body surfaces; normally harmless or even beneficial. Small subset of microbes that cause disease. Lymphocytes - immune cells responsible for adaptive immunity. Bone marrow common lymphoid progenitor cells. Some mature in the bone marrow and become mature b cells. Receptor 4 protein structure (2 light chains, 2 heavy chains); variable region (for recognition) and constant region (for response); has two antigen binding sites; called an antibody when secreted. Recognition recognizes its antigen on its own. Others travel to the thymus and develop into mature t cells.
