Early prints were made to look like manuscripts. Scriptorium: moveable metal type, ink, paper. Most out first = religious texts (they have the $ to print them) who"s got the $ and who"s got the readers. Early types print documents = what the church needed. Only later on as market expands do other books print. Most nobles didn"t want printed books they wanted manuscripts (more value) Very quickly students come into the picture bc they have no choice but to buy them & usually came from upper class so could afford them. All market driven, but is strong resistance at first, but ppl realize there is something to it. 1481 > not many presses concentrated in italy. Incunabula: in 50 yrs produce as many books as previous 1000 yrs = 8-10 mil. ~ 50% = religious, 50% = other (classical text, romance etc) Humanist training, born at the beg of this revolution.
