CRI210H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Selective Enforcement, Stress Management, Extortion
Document Summary
Police subculture: not in code, informal rules and regulations that exist within that occupation. Recently a new division was created to change the current police subculture. Nobody can understand policing and crime but those who have worn the badge and patrolled the streets. Loyalty to colleagues counts above all else. Police officers have to stick together because everyone is out to get us. It is impossible to fight crime effectively without bending the rules. With us or against us mentality > hard to outside criticism. Everyone hates the police until they need help > quick to criticize and are unsupportive unless they need help. Watch out for your partner first - then the rest of the guys on your shift. Don"t give up another cop (the code of silence) > many cases of snitching where officers get harassed by colleagues. Be aggressive - but not too eager. Don"t get involved in another cops sector.
