CIN105Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: His Girl Friday, The Teddy Bears, Classical Hollywood Cinema
Document Summary
Week 13 (lecture) wednesday, january 13th 2016. Development of classical film: classical hollywood (best way to be understood), influences cinema today, primitive (makes it sound unfinished, basic), primitive period is 1895-1908, early cinema, cinema of attractions. Films during this time have no sound (1926-1927 developed), archetypal stories, not much story development, very short films. Easy to understand basic stories, not a lot of psychological development, 10 min or less, steady camera (not a lot of camera movements, long shot) Next period after primitive is transitional which is 1909-1916, charlie kyle and others came up with period of change. After the transitional came about the classical film period: 1917 + The teddy bears (goldilocks and the three bears/ teddy roosevelt), birth of a nation, longer reels/ more sophisticated techniques, still one line of action or if two stories are being told they are side by side. Plot events we see occurring, stories happen in between these events.
