Tuesday, october 10th, 2017 12pm-2pm (alberts et al. Lecture 10 outline: protein sorting to the endoplasmic reticulum (er) The er is organized into a netlike labyrinth of branching tubules and flattened sacs that extends throughout the cytosol. Tubules and sacs interconnect, and their membrane is continuous with the outer nuclear membrane, and the compartment that they enclose is also continuous with the space between the inner and outer nuclear membranes. Er and nuclear membranes form a continuous sheet enclosing a single internal space (er lumen) The er membrane is the site of production of all the transmembrane proteins and lipids for most of the cell"s organelles, including the er itself, golgi, lysosomes, endosomes, secretory vesicles, and plasma membrane. If destined to be secreted from the cell, it"s synthesized in the er. The er is an entry point to the secretion pathway of the cell (to the cell exterior) through the golgi.
