Document Summary
Multicellular development requires: morphogenesis: generation of tissue shapes that form organs & bodies, cell differentiation: generation of different cell types is tissues- functions. Morphogenesis & cell differentiation involve: cell proliferation (cell division, cell specialization / differentiation (specific function, cell movement, cell interaction. What we learn in each system- applicable in each other system- b/c genes are conserved between organisms. Maintenance of cells in adulthood- uses the same mechanism of morphogenesis. In adults, multicellular development- occurs in stem cells. Certain cells will progress & differentiate, others will not. Cells that are fully differentiated = dead. Dermis: connective tissue, basal lamina (separates connective tissue & epithelial cells, basal cell layer- stem cells change & become specialized, pickle cell layers, granular cell layers, keratinized squames. Remember: basal cell pickle cell granular cell squames. Ex/ mammary gland epithelia: virgin / resting gland, pregnancy, lactation: alveoli dilated with milk, epithelial sheet can differentiate into alveoli sac.
