Document Summary
Mayflies live a day: adults lay eggs in water, they live in the water, they leave, females drop eggs in the water and they die. Anti-aging headlines: aging is a problem for medicine and society, difference in lifespan between rich and poor may have to do with access to healthcare. Why has aging evolved: if we have been shaped by evolutionary biology, we have evolved to age and die, there is a variation of rate of gaining across species. Aging: proximate and ultimate causes: aging/senescence. Progressive decline in somatic function in reductions in fertility as well as survivorship aging is the deterioration of the soma. As soma breaks down, it"s harder to make babies. As you age, there is an increased risk of mortality: proximate cause, progressive degeneration of the soma. As you get older, the rate at which your risk increases also increases: we have evolved to age and die, it appears non-adaptive.
