Document Summary
Example of parasites potentially controlling behaviour of hosts. Evolution by ns can lead to some pretty bizarre traits. Revisiting some of the examples: look at how strong the evidence. Need to think at level of genes to extend notion of phenotype. The phenotypic expression of a gene can exist outside the cell in which the genes exert their immediate biochemical influence : richard dawkins, 1999. Phenotype exists outside cell, maybe even outside of organism that has those genes. And these genes influence fitness (variation in mating success: genes exposed to selection. Males that make preferred types of bowers get more mates: bower = artifact (product) of gene. Bower = artifact produced by one individual. Dawkins goes further: genes can create phenotypes that are things made from several individuals. Can think about structures made of groups of individuals. Dam = artifact produced by 1 individual. How about things produced in other individuals.
