Document Summary

Week 3 intracellular compartments and protein sorting. Basic structures similar throughout cell but specific compartments have different functions b/c have diff proteins in them: ex: na+/k+ pump found mostly in pm, ex: atp synthase mostly in mitochondria. Cytosol is largest volume (54% of cell"s total volume) Peroxisomes, lysosomes, endosomes take up much less space. A subcellular compartment or large macromolecular complex, often membrane-enclosed, that has a distinct structure, composition, function: examples of membrane-enclosed organelles: Golgi apparatus: examples of organelles not membrane-bound. Nucleolus (compartment of nucleus where rna transcribed) Polarized epithelial cell: apical domain w/ microvilli diff from smooth basal domain. But virtually all cells have similar types of compartments. Relative amounts of membrane types in eukaryotic cells. Table of relative amounts of membrane types in two diff eukaryotic cells: liver hepatocyte and pancreatic endocrine cell. B/c er makes several channels throughout cytosol, many different folded compartments.
