Document Summary

Pentose sugar acts as a scaffold to which all the other components are attached. Nucleotide = when phosphate is added to the nucleoside (sugar + base: nucleoside monophosphate (amp): Nucleoside = sugar + base (ribonucleoside & deoxyribonucleoside) One of the building blocks for dna: sugar + base + 1 phosphate group, nucleoside diphosphate (adp), sugar + base + 2 phosphate groups, nucleoside triphosphate (atp), sugar + base + 3 phosphate. Interactions between individual molecules usually mediated by noncovalent attractions: electrostatic attractions. Very strong in the absence of water but weaker in water: this is important because the whole cell and the outside is surrounded by water, hydrogen bonds, special form of polar interaction and is highly directional. They are the strongest when in a straight line / same plane: van der waals attractions, related to the clouds of electrons around covalent bonds for non-polar molecules.
