Document Summary

Cell division observed in a lung cell maintained in cell culture- very few cells can be observed in the process of cell division at any given time. M phase: the nucleus and cytoplasm divide, includes mitosis and cytokinesis (cytokinesis is nuclear division and cytoplasmic division). Interphase: the period between cell divisions, includes the g1 phase, the s phase (dna replication occurs in s phase, long before mitosis) and the g2 phase, these are the steps a cell undergoes in preparation for mitosis. Cells that do not divide are in g0: Cells are not dividing but it doesn"t mean they are dying. They can still transcribe and translate, but they are not undergoing mitosis. Some of these cells (with the right stimulus) can go back into the cycle by starting at g1. They then move into s, then g2 then mitosis (m) and then undergo cytokinesis. Some cells will go to g0, some will exit the cycle.
