Document Summary

Cells interact with each other and the extracellular matrix (ecm) to form tissues. Cannel-forming junctions- stuff in one cell goes into another cell. Signal-relaying junctions- ex: synapses; cells don"t touch but come close. Epithelial cells are cells that line surfaces, cavities and organs. They might not have all of them and they might not have them in this specific order. The apical-most junction is the tight junction. Tight junctions stop stuff from going in between cells. They occur all around the regions between two cells, sealing strands. Adherens junctions are anchoring junctions (stick cells together). The desmosomes, gap junctions and hemidesmosomes are all found on the basal side of the lateral side. Desmosomes are anchoring proteins (they are found at specific spots). Gap junctions are channel-forming junctions (stuff is exchanges in between cells through them). Hemidesmosomes are anchoring junctions (anchors the cell to the extracellular matrix). Prevent mixing of membrane proteins, apical membrane proteins and basal membrane proteins.
