Document Summary
2. 0 the distribution and spatial structure of populations. Individuals within population come together to reproduce and mix gene pool of population. Each population lives primarily within areas of suitable habitat: populations are divided into smaller subpopulations or local populations, populations have a characteristic extent and size. Characteristic extent/ distribution is geographic area occupied by population. Population size is number of individuals in a population. Varies with food supplies, predation rates, nest site availability etc. 2. 1 populations are limited to ecologically suitable habitats. Fundamental niche- range of physical conditions over which species can persist. Realized niche- range of conditions (predators, pathogens, competitors etc. ) that limit distribution of the species. Influences population distribution and abundance: environmental conditions by influencing birth, death and dispersal. Dispersal limitation: absence of population from suitable habitat because of a barriers to dispersal, presence or absence of suitable habitat often determines a populations distribution, barriers to dispersal also influence population distribution.
