Document Summary

Lecture 3 what darwin saw: a geographical perspective on biodiversity and adaptation. Brazil: darwin notes high species diversity and novel adaptations in tropical forests, find fossils of extinct mammals---- transitional fossils. Very high species diversity of plant and animal groups compared with temperate zone. Many more biotic interactions, especially coevolved mutualism between plants and animals. Biotic factors are all the living things or their materials that directly or indirectly affect an organism in its environment. This would include organisms, their presence, parts, interaction, and wastes. Factors such as parasitism, disease, and predation (one animal eating another) would also be classified as biotic factors. Abiotic factors are those non-living physical and chemical factors which affect the ability of organisms to survive and reproduce. e. g. light intensity temperature range, type of soil or rock, ph level. Year-round warmth results in rapid growth of insect and microbial populations. Pest and disease pressures on plants more intense.
