Document Summary

Lecture 14- climate and other niche axes: the ecological niche, climatic variables. Ecological niche: combination of physiological tolerances and resources requirements of a species, more casually, a species" a place in the world what climate it prefers, what it eats, etc, a concept with a long history in ecology . Climate variables as important niche axes: scarlet macaw data: temperature vs precipitation graph, scarlet macaw live in hot and wet environments, about scarlet macaw, herbivore, nests in tree holes, forests were cleared, thus decreasing the population in areas. Hadley cells make equatorial regions rainy: heated air rises. Air cools as it rises 5-10 degrees celsius/km: as air cools, water vapour condenses and falls as rain near the equator, air warms again as it falls, dry, high pressure area at +/- degrees latitude. Other atmospheric cells interlock like a gear train: polar cell, ferrel cell, 30-degree rotation increments, same 3 cells in southern hemisphere, not labeled.
