Document Summary

*this lecture focuses on applied side of evolutionary biology: the societal concerns. The problem of invasive species: lantana camara is native to central america (grown often in gardens), introduced to the british by india. Introducing it to the big lakes resulted in the extinction of numerous endemic cichlid fish species: they thought introducing this fish would increase fishe(cid:396)ies (cid:271)ut (cid:373)ost af(cid:396)i(cid:272)a(cid:374)s do(cid:374)"t fi(cid:374)d this fish particularly tasty. Asian carp invasion: carp is an invasive species from asia that is a major aquatic threat in the great lakes, estimated that million was spent in 2010 to prevent the invasion. Native: an indigenous species that occurs wild in a giver region. Alien: a species that has been introduced to a part of the world which it is not native to. It is also referred to as adventive, exotic or simply introduced species (species that have expanded rapidly over the last few 100 years, recent contemporary change in the biogeography of species).
