The plants drop the leaves in extreme dry season to retain water content. They also have reduced leaves but a little bigger. They are extensive but they have shallow roots. The extensive root system is an adaptation for harvesting water that appears seasonally or brie y. The saguaro cactus grow slowly due to the tough environment. 15 meters and they weigh a lot due to the water in their tissues. They can absorb up to 800l of water. The accordion pleated trunk allows expansion as the water becomes available. These are trees that keep their leaves all seasons. Places in which water is in good supply. Sclerophyllous are leaves that are made by tough plants. Leaf shape also in uences gas exchange through laminar vs turbulent ow of uids over surfaces. Laminar ow occurs when the surface of the leaves is smooth.
