Document Summary

Bio120h1 f - lecture 3 - what darwin saw: a geographical perspective on biodiversity and adaptation. Ship"s naturalist: observed fossils, geographical distribution of organisms, species on oceanic islands. Abiotic factor: interaction between organism and its environment: e. g. temperature, humidity, wind, fire, rainfall. 21/09/2016: dominates temperature regions, such as britain, e. g. arctic - survival of organisms depends heavily upon their environment. For example, most pollination in temperature areas is due to abiotic factors (wind pollination in. Uk), whereas most pollination in tropics is due to biotic factors (animal pollination, a form of mutualism) 21/09/2016: concluded that acalia received protection from ants; through co-evolution, acalia keeps ants interested and faithful to their tree (because it"s their nest, mutualism - both species benefit. Studied devil"s garden in peru - bare areas around a certain species of tree, as ants would attack saplings growing around the tree. The tree had parts of stem that were swollen, which was a nest site for ants.
