Document Summary

Perichondrium & cartilage perichondrium is dense irregular ct has blood vessels, nerves, lymphatics function in growth, attachment of cartilage consists of 2 layers: 1. Growth of cartilage: cartilage develops from condensations of embryonic mesenchyme (all connective tissues come from mesenchyme) mesenchymal cells (embryonic connective tissue cells) differentiate into chondroblasts, which secrete the organic components of the matrix. Cartilage is of three types: a. hyaline cartilage (most common, found all over the body) closely packed collagen type 2 fibrils in a firm gel-like ground substance (makes it rubbery) fxn. B. elastic cartilage: like hyaline, but with a higher proportion of elastic fibres (allows something to stretch and bounce back, call this resiliency) fxn. Provides greater resiliency, i. e. it bounces back eg. pinna of external ear (made of elastic cartilage) as well as epiglottis (covers over the larynx airway when you swallow)
