SOCA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Collectivism, Hidden Curriculum, Thomas Theorem
Document Summary
The process by which people learn their culture including norms, values, and roles and become aware of themselves as they interact with others : this process is very complex and includes a number of agents of socialization . There is often tension between these agents as socialization is not a single linear phenomenon. There are often conflicting messages across socializing agents: there isn"t a single method. Theories of socialization cooley: looking-glass self, when we interact with others, they gesture and react to us. This response allows us to imagine how we appear to others. Possibility of dissonance between the ways we see ourselves and how the world perceives can lead to a reconceptualization of self. Poor performance may have as much to do with teachers" negative evaluations as with students" innate abilities : can also include other phenomena such as body image.
