The process by which people learn their culture including norms, values, and roles and become aware of themselves as they interact with others (p. 96) This process is very complex and includes a number of agents of socialization . There is often tension between these agents as socialization is not a single linear phenomenon. There are often conflicting messages across socializing agents. When we interact with others, they gesture and react to us. This response allows us to imagine how we appear to others. We then judge how others evaluate us (p. 97) There is a sense of congruence between the ways with which how i see myself and how the world sees me.
