Document Summary

Chapter 2 origins of criminal behaviors: developmental risk factors. Each person follows a developmental pathway, the characteristics of which can often be identified at a very early age. The developmental perspective views the life course of all humans as following a path (or trajectory) that may be littered with risk factors. The more risks the person is exposed to, the greater is the probability that person will participate in antisocial behavior throughout his/her lifetime. In general, a nurturing and healthy environment minimizes biologically and socially toxic conditions that. It is unlikely that any single risk factor, by itself causes social, aggressive or violent behavior. For e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple, li(cid:448)i(cid:374)g i(cid:374) po(cid:448)ert(cid:455) is a re(cid:272)og(cid:374)ized risk fa(cid:272)tor (cid:271)ut po(cid:448)ert(cid:455) alo(cid:374)e does (cid:374)ot (cid:862)(cid:272)ause(cid:863) a(cid:374)tiso(cid:272)ial behavior. The cumulative risk model (cr) is favored by developmental researchers; they believe that this accumulation of risk factors in the absence of sufficient protective factors results in negative behavioral, emotional and cognitive outcomes.
