Antisocial behaviour, including criminal behaviour, in adults can often be traced to their childhood. Risk factors we are most interested in. Social risk factors i. e. poverty and limited resources. Family risk factors i. e. faulty or inadequate parenting, sibling influences, child maltreatment or abuse. Inadequate cognitive and language ability, lack of empathy, poor interpersonal and social skills, and behavioural disorders: more biologically based, such as troublesome or prenatal exposure to neurotoxins. Early identification of risk factors improves the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs. Certain risk factors are closely linked to delinquency and criminal behaviour, but how are why they are linked is largely unknown: protective factors characteristics or experiences that can shield children from serious antisocial behaviour. There is no magic bullet that creates antisocial behaviour.
