Identity threat model of stigma: situational cues, collective representations of one"s stigma status, and personal characteristics shape appraisal of the significance of stigma- relevant situations for well being. Possessing a devalued social identity increase exposure to stressful identity threatening situations: stigma induces identity threat which results when an individual appraises the demands imposed by stigma relevant stressor as potentially harmful to his or her social identity. It may interfere with accurate knowledge of one"s strengths and weakness: disengaging self-esteem and effort from identity threatening domains (vs. engaging and striving in these domains, by devaluing the importance of stereotyped domains.
