Document Summary

Visual imagery: a variety of day-to-day problems seem to require the use of visual imagery. Memory and imagery: paivio"s dual-coding theory: The theory that there are two ways of representing events, verbal and non-verbal. Logogens: the units containing the information underlying our use of a word; the components of the verbal system. Imagens: the units containing information that generate mental images; the components of the non-verbal system. Concreteness: the degree to which a word refers to something that can be experienced by the senses. Correlated with imagery, and may represent the same process. Imagery: the ease with which something such as a word can elicit a mental image: research related to dual-coding theory: Four groups learned 16 pairs of words. Varied whether first and second word were concrete or abstract across groups. Had to generate second word or pair when cued with first. They can be coded with both codes, whereas abstract words can only be coded verbally.
