About 96% of births are attended by physicians and 4% attended by midwives. Labour is brought on by: series of uterine, cervical and other changes that begin about 2 weeks before delivery. Definitive trigger for the advent of labour is unclear: due to a specific protein produced by the body. Lasts 12 to 14 hours for a woman having her first child. Causes the cervix to shorten and dilate: second stage:
