Document Summary

Week 4 september 28 th , 2016: childbirth was a struggle with death for both mother and baby. Women had a 1/10 chance of dying while or shortly after giving birth. 50% as likely to die in childbirth as is a woman giving birth today. Thousands of babies were stillborn, and born alive died during their first year: prospective fathers and doctors were not around during labour; births attended solely by midwives, herbal and folk medicine used at the time. It wasn"t until the turn of the 20th century that childbirth began to be professionalized. Modern childbirth: childbirth professionalized, growing use of maternity hospitals, most births attended by physicians and a few midwives. Midwives: provide care during pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period, and offer assistance in breast-feeding and other primary care services to women. Registered nurses with special training in midwifery. Doula: an experienced mentor, coach, and helper who supports women emotionally during labour and childbirth.
