Freud came to believe that all human behaviour is motivated by instinctual desires that provide psychic energy. Drives could be unconscious as well as conscious. Most psychologists today do not believe freud"s theories, nding them scienti cally untestable. Reason (ego) balances the two sides, referee. Instinct (id) wants things and wants them right away. Conscience (superego) the version of us that everyone would like. The manner in which our internal energies are released determines our personalities.
