Document Summary

Compares what you thought you were going to do (according to motor cortex) with what is actually occurring in limbs (according to proprioceptive feedback), and corrects movement if problem exists. Once master a new skill (e. g. riding a bike), it becomes embedded in cerebellum. Allows for coordinated movements (e. g. balance) of muscles and joints by synthesizing data from brain stem, spinal cord, cerebral cortex, and sensory info from muscle. A long-lasting weakening in signal transmission between neurons. Inputs to cerebellum have a somatotopic organization . Allows fine motor functions, intricacies of voluntary movement. Damage to it may cause drunken gait (abnormal walking style seen in patient with cerebellar lesion) Purkinje cells layer: distinctive layer of purkinje cells. Granule cell layer: layer of small, diffuse granular cells. Pc dendrites extend only into the molecular layer where they branch like a fan, flattened. Pc axons synapse on neurons in the deep cerebellar nuclei.
