Impact on people with disabilities: disability disproportionately affects vulnerable pops. Lower income countries have higher prevalence of disability than higher income countries. Disability more common among women, older ppl & children and adults who are poor: ppl w disabilities more likely to be unemployed than non disabled ppl. Global data show employment rates lower for disabled men (53%) & disabled women (20%) than for non disabled men (65%) & non disabled women (30%: ppl w disabilities vulnerable to poverty. Ppl w disabilities have worse living conditions including insufficient food, poor housing, lack of access to safe water & sanitation than non disabled ppl. In many countries rehabilitation services are inadequate: rehabilitation helps minimize functioning & support independence. Disabilities stigmatizing, not much research done in past: 1b ppl live w disability, 1/7 have disability, 80% of ppl w disabilities live in developing countries, 150m children under 18 have disabilities.
