Pathogens: disease causing organisms, include: bacteria, viruses, protozoans, fungi, parasitic worms & prions, virulence, relative ability of pathogen to cause disease, determined by: Symptoms of disease depend on which cells are killed. Slow release of new viruses allows cell to remain alive & continue to reduce new viruses for prolonged period: latent infection, delay b/w infection & symptoms, virus present in cell w/ out harming cell. Symptoms begin when virus starts to actively replicate & new viruses exiting host cell can cause cell death: primary infection, latent period, secondary infection, transformation to cancerous cell, certain viruses insert genetic info into host cell chromosomes. Some carry oncogenes (cancer causing genes) that are active in host cell.
