Lecture 10 april 2nd. Food webs in aquatic ecosystems usually begin with microorganisms, as with all food webs. They also have silica cell walls. They can be found in aquatic habitats, but also terrestrial habitats as well. Aktines: enlarged, thick cell walled dormant cyanobacteria. Hepatotoxins are toxins that attack the liver. Cyanobacteria: these are the most concern to scientists because they are far more widespread than the neurotoxins produced in some cyanobacteria. Neurotoxins attack the nervous system. Some toxins simply cause irritation. Species requiring high oxygen levels disappear. Species tolerant of low oxygen levels dominate. Species diversity is reduced overall.
