Water covers 71% of the earth"s surface. Some areas have lots of water but the largest rivers are far from agricultural and population centers. Lots of precipitation arrives during a short period but cannot be collected and stored. Use about 54% of the world"s reliable runoff of surface water and could be using 70-90% by. Withdrawl - the total amount of water removed from a river, lake, or aquifer for any purpose. Some may be returned to the source for reuse but not all. 85% of water used for irrigation is consumed and not returned to its water basin. Average water use in canadian homes: showers and baths - 35, toilet flushing - 30, laundry - 20, kitchen and drinking - 10, cleaning - 5% People do not have regular access to clean water.
