Document Summary
Only one of these mechanisms can explain adaptation: natural selection: mutation, migration (gene flow, selection (different reproductive success in species, genetic drift. Outcome: no single beetle changed colour; population of beetles changed from mostly green to all orange. Thrfr. outcome: adaptation: trait that makes organism well suited to their environment. Ex. body colour that is unattractive to predators. The 4 mechanisms of evolution happen in microevolution, then after lots of time, in macroevolution. Darwin"s theory: small changes within lineages (species) accumulate over time and can eventually lead to divergence (speciation, change in species) If life on earth evolved from a single ancestor, we should see: (4: some traits held in common by all life. Recall: 7 common physiological/genetic traits (near end of lec. Ex. the use of model organisms to investigate human diseases (animal testing) Only later would more complex forms appear.
