Document Summary

Harvesting energy from carbohydrates and other fuel molecules. Pyruvate is oxidized to acetyl-coa, connecting glycolysis to the citric acid cycle. Cellular respiration: series of catabolic reactions that convert energy in fuel molecules into atp. Glycolysis: partial oxidation of glucose, production of pyruvate, atp and reduced electron carriers. Citric acid cycle: complete oxidation of fuel molecules, generation of atp and reduced electron carriers. Electron transport chain: transfers electrons from electron carriers to oxygen, uses energy released to pump protons and synthesize. Glucose can be broken down in the absence of oxygen by fermentation, producing a small amount of atp section 7. 6). Metabolic pathways are integrated, allowing control of the energy level of cells (section 7. 7). Cellular respiration (general) breaks down carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, converts energy in fuel molecules into atp, allows the cell to do the work. Stage 1: in glycolysis, glucose is partially broken down and a modest amount of energy is released.
