Document Summary

The energetic, metabolic & cellular basis of life. The 3 stages of cellular respiration: glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation and the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation. Metabolism in the absence of oxygen -- fermentation. Def: a collection of metabolic reactions that breaks down food molecules to produce atp. Similar: carbohydrates (c-h bonds) electrons are not held tightly by either the carbon and hydrogen, this allows the electrons to be released and therefore energy released. Fat has more energy than glucose bc fat can be broken into 3, 2c acetyl coa molecules but glucose is broken down into just 2 acetyl coa, and it wastes 2 carbons bc it makes co2. Also fat produces 1 nadh and 1 fadh2, this produces extra atp. Sugar glucose (c6h12o6) = most common energy molecule deltag for the complete conversion of glucose is -686 kcal/mol. Multi-step chemical reactions catalyzed by enzymes involve energy transfer: electron transfer = redox reactions, phosphate transfer = atp hydrolysis/synthesis.
