ANTC67H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Clinical Trial, Rare Disease, Cohort Study
Document Summary
Recall: objective of epidemiology is to identify the causes of disease. Basic concepts: interested in a association between variable, normally study is about a specific population, after identifying population you need to select sample (can classify individuals into categories). Example like exposed vs. unexposed: study the individuals in the sample. Randomly allocated to intervention group ( therapy/medication) and control group (standard care/placebo) Randomization: experimental studies, a formal chance mechanism is used to assign subject to intervention or control: makes group unbiased and similar in characteristic like age, sex, weight . Ethic: exposure needs to be modifiable, there must be uncertainty about if intervention under investigation better than standard care, patient should not be denied appropriate treatment, and patient should give consent. Goal: assess effectiveness of intervention at treating or controlling: field trial: assign exposure to healthy people instead of patients health outcome.
