It was a problem when they wanted to vote, bc everyone thought levi. Suynam was a female, however they claimed to be a male, thus they have the right to vote as a man. It shows the construction of gender in that time period -> whether or not you have a political voice. This was brought to the courts -> brought in a doctor to decide. In a contemporary time we make the distinction between sex & gender.
