SOC355H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Trait Theory, Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation
Document Summary
Soc355 lecture 1 january 5 th 2016. Trait theory: there are particular traits and characters that make a profession. Technical autonomy: they own their knowledge and expertise. Ex. it is doctors that define what the medical profession can do and they control and own that. Self-regulation: if there is misconduct and wrongdoing, it is members of that group that decide if those individuals are right or wrong. Sense of community: defining the rules of what it means to be that professional. Andrew abbott wrote a book called the systems of professions, he provided an alternative approach to defining what a profession is. He thought about professions as a system, one group is opposing and defining itself in opposition to another group. All professions provide services to people and they need clients always having to compete over clients. Doctors, physiatrist will both claim that they can fix back problems.
