The story of professions was told sequentially. Argued that there is no escalator, and steps in the naturalization of professionalism. Professionals have educations and licensing, but it"s not enough. Arguing against trait theory when knowledge transforms other occupations can take work away and force profession to change how its organized. What matters about occupations is the relation to the work that it does. Vacancy, either abandoned by profession or something new going on ex. Once they"ve claimed the vacancy, the occupation can expand their focus. There is frequent conflict between occupations and boundaries. When they engage in conflict, this allows them to define themselves as professionals. When dentists gave up jurisdiction over dental hygiene, not necessarily good. The state: grants formal control over jurisdiction. The public: if the public only wanted to go to hygienists, we"ve lost our faith in dentists. The workplace: huge part of today"s professions.
