Historically there was a new form of gender inequality. No idea before this, there were no separate spheres. The work that occurs in the marketplace became separate from work done in the household. Idea that women and men are different people suited to different worlds is new. Understanding how couples divide unpaid household labour and responsibility has long been a concern of sociologists. Analyzes how separate spheres ideology is experienced by families. Argument: the economy and men being sole income earners affect the relationship between husbands and wives. Women dependent on men because few alternatives = low bargaining power. Social relations is the theory that recognizes the importance of cultural ideals. In her book, she analyzes the implications of separate spheres ideology. She is looking at the implications of this conventional pattern.
