29 views3 pages

Document Summary

Marriages are not always safe for women because of violence: male privilege; economic dependency. Women experienced a lot of economic constraints and inequalities that affected their marriage. Did not have the opportunity to be economically independent. Women do not have alternatives to marriage: men"s work is prioritized. Men worked in mines but the working conditions in the mines are bad. However, men enjoy privileges of being sole breadwinners. Mining job takes priority in the home because it structures the whole household. Everyone"s activities are subordinated to shift work in mines. Women had to coordinate all of their housework according to the men"s rotating night shifts. Women become responsible for their husband"s needs and wellbeing: marriages changed as working conditions changed. Longer shifts in mines so men were away from their families. Over the years, hours declined so they were at home more. Sense that marriages were better in later generations.
