50% of new sector principals are not certified. 85% of new sector schools hire non-certified staff. Teachers are expected to teach and be passionate about it and are expected to be fine with lower pay because they are pursuing their passion. Certification doesn"t matter as much in private schools - elite private schools. Teaching has over time enjoyed greater status, it has also gone through a lot of scrutiny. Status but greater scrutiny - parents blame teachers for lower grades. Politicians putting more money into education but are challenging teachers authority. Government having more authority over curriculum but teachers are the one who are in the classroom teaching and they become restricted to teaching certain things. Schools pass along knowledge, values and norms. Schools are secondary socialization agents (family is primary) Schools have a role in learning and teaching truth about cultural values and behavioural expectations.
