Criminality varies across the life course and by gender. Most people engage in crime between the ages of 13 and 25. These general patterns hold true for men and women, although the timing for each may be different: women start at younger ages and age out faster than men. Causes of the gender gap in offending beginning to close: could be a convergence: women may be doing more crime so their offending rates are closer to men. Typical offences for men include: violence, sexual offences, robbery, theft, fraud, mischief, drugs. Why men do crime: function of the individualist and competitive culture of north america, crime as a way to satisfy ambition. Why women do crime: victimization, male pressure, substance abuse. Have family backgrounds that lack parental warmth and caring with inconsistent and harsh punishments. Do poorly in school and feel alienated from it, causing them to maybe drop out, or have erratic attendance.
