Tripartite model of attitudes: affective, cognitive, behavioural. Affective component- hostile or negative attitude toward a distinguishable group of people, based solely on their membership to that group: typically prejudice refers to negative feelings. Cognitive component- stereotypes (generalization about a group of people in which identical characteristics are assigned to virtually all members of the group, regardless of actual variation among the members: ex. Canadians are more dull and boring compared to americans: ex. Schemas that allow for easy and efficient organization of information about people based on their group membership. Doesn"t necessarily have to lead to negative or harmful behaviours. Behavioural component- unjustified negative or harmful action toward a member of a group, simply because of his or her membership to that group. Institutional discrimination- discriminatory practices and policies in large institutions (eg. legal system, universities: ex. Apartheid in south africa, segregation laws in the us during the first half of the 20th century.
