Document Summary

Language is a communication system in which words and their written symbols combine in various, regulated ways to produce an in nite number of messages. Adults are only able to discriminate phonemes in their native languages- ex. adult native japanese speakers have dif culty hearing difference between /r/ and /l/ Young infants are able to discriminate phonemes from most languages. Word learning is slow at rst, rst word around the rst birthday -> 50 words by 18 months. Naming explosion (18-24 months) -> 200-300 words by 24 months. Learning perspective: according to the learning perspective the environment (nurture) drives the language development: video about genie: she was tied to potty chair during day and strapped to bed at night, not allowed to talk. She was discovered at age 13 and could not speak and walk properly. After she was discovered, they were trying to teach her to speak but she never learned the language as we do.
