Document Summary

A group is not something really tangible; groups are objectively outlined for us to see and it"s an idea. There"s some obvious answers; schutz"s fundamental interpersonal relations orientation. Why it"s important for us to be with others. There are psychological needs for group formation; we want to belong and be accepted. We want to be validated; this is important for our self-worth and belongingness. The idea of inclusion and the idea of being part of something; social austracism comes with it. Social austraucism is a device of control of others (ex: the amish community; if you don"t follow the traditions, you will be shunned) Groups are the only ways that we are able to organize and influence our dominance over others (ex: cults) Conformity allows us to have culture and shared norms. We are less likely to help someone if there"s a bigger group of people.
