Document Summary

The nok kingdom was smelting iron and producing grains. There was a lot of groups rising and falling for some time in the south. In the north, there was two groups: the hausa and fulani kingdoms which were later considered uni ed even though this was not entirely true. In 1809, the sokoto caliphate was created where the whole north was made into one whole islamic polity. Within this, there were smaller groups that existed within it. Eventually britain decided to abolish slavery and so in 1807, they outlawed the shipping of slaves. To enforce this rule they brought a squad of ships in an area within nigeria. Nigeria was dependent on slavery and the british encouraged that they engage in legitimate commerce like producing palm oil. This switch to legitimate commerce did not end the slave trade because they ended up capturing more slaves to produce palm oil.
